Introduction

Jaisalmer the Golden City of India is one of the most exotic and unusual towns of Rajasthan famous for its desert landscapes, exciting camel safaris, splendid forts, gorgeous temples and captivating havelis. This city is a paragon of beautiful culture, magnificent monuments and harsh climatic condition which calls on scores of tourists from across the globe.
It is known as the Golden City because the sun sets emit a lustrous glow of golden colour rays on  the yellow sandstone buildings of this place. Ages have passed but the monuments of Jaisalmer have withstood the harsh time which utters the glory of bygone era that enthrall tourists during their Jaisalmer tour.

History

History of Jaisalmer is deep rooted in the Indian legends. In the 12th century Maharawal Jaisal a Bhati Rajput prince and a descendant of the Yadav clan came to Jaisalmer to seek the blessings of the sage Eesul. The sage told him about Lord Krishna predictions that the descendant of the Yadav clan would  build his kingdom atop the Trikuta Hill.  So Bhatti Rajputs founded the town of Jaisalmer amidst the desert landscapes.

Jaisalmer Attractions

Jaisalmer Fort
It is among the most formidable forts in Rajasthan which was built in the 12th century. It is situated atop the Tikuta hill. This massive fort is a 250 feet tall  which is surrounded by a 30 feet high sandstone wall.  It is a dominating structure amidst desert which is renowned for its 99 bastions which offers a spectacular sight to visitors. It is popularly known as Sonar Quila. The popular attractions of this fort are Ganesh Pol, Akshya Pol, Suraj Pol and Hawa Pol.

Jaisalmer Havelis
It was the residence of wealthy merchants. These  havelis (mansions) are famous for their artistic designs and decorations. The Patwon-ki-Haveli, Salim-Singh-ki-Haveli and Nathmalji-ki-Haveli are major havelis in Jaisalmer which are known for their exclusive sculpture of yellow and red stone. The bracket-shaped decoration of peacocks in these mansions never fail to mesmerise the visitors.

Gadsisar Sagar Lake
It is the famous picnic spot in Jaisalmer. It is a water conservation tank made around 1400 A.D. by the   maharaja Maharwal Gadsi Singh. In winter season this lake attracts hundreds of migratory birds which epitomizes its beauty.  The lake is surrounded by number of temples and shrines.

Tazia Tower
This is a 5 storied structure where each story has its own significance. On each floor there is a balcony which is famous for their individual designs and decorations.

Sam Sand Dunes
It is a popular tourist attraction of Jaisalmer where tourists can enjoy the fun, thrill and excitement of camel safari. This place is also famous for the breathtaking view of sunset.

The Desert National Park
This is one of the largest national parks in India sprawled over an area of 3,100 sq km. The park is known for its ecosystem and unique flora and fauna.

When to Visit Jaisalmer
Although the city is bustling with tourists throughout the year but the ideal time to visit Jaisalmer is from October to the month of March.

Jaisalmer Cuisine
Ker Sangri and Kadi Pakora are two most mouth-watering vegetarian delicacies of Jaisalmer.

Jaisalmer is famous across the globe for its number of traditional Rajasthani handicrafts. This place is renowned for embroidery,  antiques,  rugs, mirror work, embroiders article silver jewellery, stonework and blanket.

How to Reach Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer by Road
There are many semi deluxe and deluxe buses available  for Jodhpur at regular intervals. Deluxe A/C buses are also available from Jaisalmer to Jaipur, Ajmer and Bikaner. Rajasthan state buses connect Jaisalmer with neighbouring cities.

Jaisalmer by Train
Jaisalmer railway station is an important railway station. It is connected to Jodhpur and other cities in India.

Jaisalmer by Air
Nearest airport is Jodhpur which is at a distance of 285 km from Jaisalmer. Jodhpur is connected to Delhi and Jaipur by air. Pre-paid taxi service is available from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer. Delhi is the nearest major international airport, which is connected well with all major cities in India and many important cities in abroad.
