Patwon Ki Haveli

Patwon Ki Haveli

Patwon Ki Haveli is a splendid mansion which occupies an important place in the list of the havelis in Jaisalmer. It is a five- storied structure and was the first and the largest haveli built in Jaisalmer in 1805 by Guman Chand Patwaone. It is made of yellow sandstone. He was a prudent trader and was very rich. His business entailed gold and silver thread embroidery work in dresses. Thus the haveli is also refered as the 'mansion of brocade merchants' .The glorious haveli took a long span of 50 years for its completion. The balconies and rooms of the haveli are decorated with stunning mirror work and paintings. Each arch here has its own different theme giving a glorious look to the haveli.

Nevertheless, even after these encroachments and abuse you can find a good amount of paintings and mirror-works on the wall. The other important aspects are its gateways and arches. You will notice individual depictions and theme on each and every arch. Although the whole building is made yellow sandstone, the main gateway of the Patwon Ji ki Haveli is in brown color.

Patwon-Ji-Ki-Haveli is one of the largest Haveli in Jaisalmer and stands in a narrow lane. It is five storeys high and is extensively carved. It is divided into six apartments, two owned by archaeological Survey of India, two by families who operate craft-shops and two private homes. There are remnants of paintings on some of the inside walls as well as some mirror work.
