Jaisamand Lake

Jaisalmer Lake

Jaisamand Lake is the second largest artificial lake in Asia. The arresting lake was constructed by Maharana Jai Sigh in 1685. The lake is sandwiched between two palaces which the king built for his darling queens. The lake is surrounded by many beautiful Chhatris (cenotaphs). Presence of Lord Shiv's Temple on the island of the lake makes it a holy place where locals come for puja. The forest near the lake, which was once the hunting ground for the Maharajas is now a wildlife sanctuary, Jaisamand Wildlife Sanctuary. It is now a home to wild animals such as panther, wild Boar, deer, four horned Antelopes (a rare species to be seen)and mongoose. You can even spot some migratory birds on the lake. The lake houses seven islands which are inhibited by the tribe of Bhil Minas.
