Jantar Mantar

Jantar Mantar

This wonderful architectural establishment is the largest stone observatory in the world. It is a part of the City Palace complex in Jaipur. It was built by Maharaja Jai Singh II. It is a collection of several stone-instruments which were used to measure altitude, time, movements of the planets and the stars, predict eclipses and calculate other astronomical events. It was a great achievement of that era. The Sundial tells the accurate time. Maharaja Jai Singh II had a great inclination towards astronomy. He used astronomical inventions from different cultures in order to transform his creative dream of constructing Jantar Mantar into a reality. He also constructed same monument in Delhi, though it is much smaller than the Jaipur one. Its original name was Yantra Mantra, which means instruments and formulas. The mispronunciation of its name resulted in its latter name, Jantar Mantar. Today it is a National Monument Of India.
